Gallo Enters Scotch Whisky With Deal To Import Whyte & Mackay Range
December 2, 2015E.&J. Gallo is upping its presence in spirits with entry into the Scotch whisky category, agreeing to become the exclusive U.S. importer for the portfolio of Whyte & Mackay, effective January 1. Gallo will handle Whyte & Mackay’s John Barr blended Scotch and single malts The Dalmore and Jura, which Whyte & Mackay has previously self-imported. The single malts retail from $45 upwards, while the blends are priced at $20 and above. Whyte & Mackay’s namesake blended Scotch will not be marketed in the U.S. Gallo Spirits director of marketing Anna Bell said the aim “is to grow the availability of The Dalmore, Jura and John Barr whiskies in targeted on- and off-premise accounts across the United States.”
Whyte & Mackay was acquired by the Philippines’ Emperador from Diageo-controlled United Spirits Ltd. last year for about $726 million. Emperador, who is Gallo’s distributor in the Philippines, approached Gallo about distributing the Whyte & Mackay whiskies stateside earlier this year, SND learned. In addition to its own brands, Whyte & Mackay has historically been a major private-label Scotch producer, offering ample capacity for Emperador and Gallo to potentially target the U.S. with new brand propositions in the Scotch whisky space down the road.
