Control States Up Their Game, And Have The Volume Growth To Show For It
June 13, 2016Control state spirits volumes rose by 2.7% last year to 49 million nine-liter cases, according to Impact Databank. The longer-term growth curve for spirits in the control markets, however, has been far more dramatic. From 2000-2015, control state spirits volumes rose by 49% on a pro-forma basis (excluding now-privatized Washington state). That compares favorably to the open states’ pro-forma growth rate of 46% during the same period.
The control markets also continue to account for a sizeable slice of total U.S. spirits volumes, last year achieving nearly a 23% share of the 216-million-case U.S. spirits market. At the heart of this success has been a transformation of their retail environments, with the major players all upping their game. Stores are being expanded, operating hours are longer, and product selection has improved significantly. Market Watch has the full report on today’s control state landscape.
