Eight new Market Watch Leaders from six retail businesses were inducted at last night’s dinner. Here’s a look at the Leaders Class of 2016:
•Christian Navarro of Wally’s Wine and Spirits in Los Angeles. After starting his career at Wally’s 25 years ago, Navarro became partner, president and COO when the business was sold in 2013. Since then, Wally’s has launched a stylish new location in Beverly Hills that includes an on- and off-premise space, and it has an eye on further expansion.
•Stephen Bebis of Edmonton, Canada-based Liquor Stores NA. Bebis oversees a network of 200 stores in Canada and 39 locations in the United States, including Brown Jug in Alaska, Liquor Barn in Kentucky and Joe Canal’s Discount Liquor Outlets in New Jersey. Current annual revenues are $570 million, with the U.S. stores accounting for $170 million of that total.
•Carol and John Zonski of Jubilation Wine & Spirits in Albuquerque, New Mexico. One of Albuquerque’s most beloved retail destinations since its founding in 1958, Jubilation does annual sales of more than $5 million and is known for its curated selection and a host of product exclusives.
•Jose Barrios II and Jose Barrios III of Vintage Liquor & Wine Bar in Miami, Florida. Launched in 2000, Vintage is an on- and off-premise hybrid with three locations in the Miami market and annual revenues of $9 million. In a relatively short period of time, Vintage Liquor & Wine Bar has become one of South Florida’s most progressive retailers, with a loyal customer following.
•Lisa Rydman of Houston-based Spec’s Wine, Spirits & Finer Foods. Rydman became Market Watch’s only third-generation Leader last night, following in the footsteps of her parents, John and Lindy Rydman, and her grandfather, Spec Jackson. With 165 stores in Texas, 3,500 employees and annual revenues of more than $1 billion, Spec’s is at the top tier among the nation’s retailers.
•Christine Elder of Boston-area retailer Blanchards Wines & Spirits. Blanchards is one of the oldest beverage alcohol retailers in the United States, and Elder leads three locations in greater Boston—in West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain and Revere, Massachusetts. Elder was saluted for her commitment to service, selection and creating a comprehensive shopping experience that has insured the longevity of her business.
The market’s most successful brands were also honored at the dinner. Tito’s Handmade Vodka won the award for Spirits Brand of the Year thanks to its 40% volume growth last year, which took it near the 3-million-case mark. New Zealand wine brand Kim Crawford, whose volume has nearly doubled since 2012 to approach 1 million cases, took home the trophy for Wine Brand of the Year. Lagunitas IPA, which has added 4 million cases since 2012, was named Beer Brand of the Year.
The best-performing new products were also recognized. Jameson Caskmates from Pernod Ricard USA ($30 a 750-ml.) garnered the award for Best New Spirits Product. Launched in 2015, Caskmates is projected to hit 100,000 cases this year. In wine, Delicato Family Vineyards won with Bota Brick, the 1.5-liter boxed wine that’s projected to sell 250,000 cases in 2016. And in beer, the winner was Not Your Father’s Root Beer from Small Town Brewery/Pabst Brewing Co. Rocketing to 3 million (2.25-gallon) cases in its inaugural year of 2015, Not Your Father’s effectively launched the hard soda category, and is projected to reach 5 million cases this year.
