January 13, 2017•Grand Rapids, Michigan’s Founders Brewing Co. is introducing Frootwood aged cherry ale as the first release in its new Barrel-Aged Series. The 8%-abv ale was aged in barrels that previously held Bourbon and maple syrup. Frootwood is the first in a series of six barrel-aged beers Founders is planning to release this year. It’s available in four-packs for about $15 and 750-ml. bottles for about $12. Founders, in which Spain’s Mahou San Miguel owns a 30% stake, continues to expand its distribution footprint, most recently adding the Pacific Northwest.
•Hawaii-based Kona Brewing Co., part of the Craft Brew Alliance (CBA), is adding Hanalei Island IPA to its national year-round lineup following a limited launch last summer. The 4.5%-abv session IPA is brewed with Millennium, Azacca and Galaxy hops. Hanalei Island IPA is available nationwide in six-packs and on draft. Kona’s depletions surged 18% in the nine months through September, while CBA’s total depletions increased 1%. In addition to Kona, CBA’s brands include Redhook, Widmer Brothers and Omission.
•Seattle’s Elysian Brewing is launching Split Shot Espresso Milk Stout as part of its seasonal lineup. Split Shot is made with cold brew coffee from Stumptown Coffee Roasters. The 6%-abv expression will be offered in six-packs, 22-ounce bottles and on draft across 31 markets through March. It joins Superfuzz Blood Orange Pale, Night Owl Pumpkin Ale and Bifrost Winter Ale in Elysian’s existing seasonal stable.
