Exclusive: Davos Brands Takes Controlling Stake In Sombra Mezcal, Astral Tequila

March 29, 2017

New York-based Davos Brands has acquired a controlling stake in the Sombra Mezcal and Astral Tequila brands, including worldwide rights to both brands and the newly opened Sombra distillery in Oaxaca, Mexico. The purchase price wasn’t disclosed.

Davos has handled both labels as part of its U.S. portfolio since 2015. Sombra ($40) and Astral ($45) were founded by master sommelier Richard Betts, who will retain a significant minority stake and continue to be involved in the business. The two Mexican spirits have been growing fast from a small base since joining Davos, which has expanded them into national distribution.

This is the second acquisition play for Davos in the past six months. Late last year, the company purchased Aviation gin ($30) from Oregon craft distiller House Spirits. Davos was established in 2014 by Ty Ku sake founder Andrew Chrisomalis and Svedka vodka founder Guillaume Cuvelier.—Daniel Marsteller
