Diageo Cleared To Build Irish Whiskey Distillery For Roe & Co. Brand
May 26, 2017Diageo has received the go-ahead to build a €25 million ($28m) Irish whiskey distillery at its St. James’s Gate facility in Dublin. Beginning in 2019, the company will use the planned distillery to produce and blend Roe & Co., a new 45%-abv premium Irish whiskey made from a blend of malt and grain whiskies, to be aged in Bourbon casks.
The first whiskey produced at the Dublin distillery is expected to be released in 2022. Diageo has already begun to sell Roe & Co. whiskey, sourced from unnamed third-party Irish distilleries, in select European markets. Roe & Co. marks Diageo’s first foray into Irish whiskey since the company traded the Bushmills brand to Cuervo in return for full control of Tequila Don Julio and $400 million in 2015. —Shane English
