Control State Spirits Sales Top 50 Million Cases
February 5, 2018Distilled spirits sales increased 2.5% in control states to 50.4 million cases in 2017, according to the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association (NABCA). It’s the first time ever that spirits volume has exceeded 50 million cases in control jurisdictions, although last year’s gain represented a slight slowdown from 2016’s 2.8% increase.
Michigan remained the largest control state at just under 8 million cases last year, after a 2.8% gain, followed closely by Pennsylvania. Irish whiskey led all categories in control states with a 14% surge in 2017, followed by Tequila, with a 9.5% increase. Vodka, the largest spirits category, eked out a 1.9% gain last year. For the first time ever, Tito’s was the largest-selling spirits item in control states on an annual basis, after an impressive 46% advance to 1.36 million cases in 2017, surpassing previous number-one Fireball.—Juan Banaag
