Italy, France, Spain Drive Imported Table Wine To 100 Million Cases
February 12, 2018After three lackluster years, imported table wine shipments to the U.S. passed the 100-million-case mark in 2017, posting a solid 6% gain, according to recently released data from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Bottled table wine imports advanced a modest 3.5% to a new all-time high of 79 million cases last year.
Italy remains the biggest volume player among imported wines, shipping 27.7 million cases to the U.S. last year, a 2% increase. The fastest-growing sources of bottled wine imports in 2017 were France (+19%) and Spain (+14%), while Australia (-5%), Chile (-4%) and Argentina (-4%) lost ground. Meanwhile, bottled wine imports from New Zealand exceeded the 5-million-case mark for the first time ever last year, after a 7% gain. —Juan Banaag
