March 5, 2019•Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits has launched a new wine division in the Canadian market. The division includes a dedicated wine sales team trained to sell and represent wine suppliers to on-premise and retail customer accounts across Canada. Doug Wieland, executive vice president and general manager of Southern Glazer’s Canada, said the company has “enormous opportunity to grow the wine business with our extensive customer base in Canada,” and will continue investing to give greater focus to that part of the business.
•A new Speyburn 18-year-old, a 17-year-old Bladnoch, and a blended malt from Compass Box are among the new offerings featured in Whisky Advocate’s latest whisky roundup. The magazine’s website has the full story.
•John Shafer, a pioneer in Napa’s Stags Leap District, died March 2 at the age of 94. Shafer was 48 years old in 1972, working as a textbook publisher in Chicago, when he decided to pick up and move his family to California to pursue wine, despite knowing very little about the business. He went on to create one of Napa’s first cult Cabernets in his Hillside Select bottling. Wine Spectator has more on Shafer’s life and career.
