Illinois Legislature Sends Recreational Cannabis Bill To Governor’s Desk

Illinois is set to become the next frontier in the recreational cannabis movement, making it the 11th state to approve adult use. Late Friday, the state legislature passed a bill that will allow recreational cultivation and sales of cannabis by next year.

Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker, who campaigned on the issue, has said he will sign the bill into law. Under the new legislation, Illinois residents age 21 or older may possess 30 grams of cannabis (and lesser amounts of concentrate or infused products), while non-residents may possess 15 grams.

The state’s existing medical marijuana dispensaries will be allowed to begin recreational sales on January 1. Following that, dozens of retail, processing, transport, and cultivation licenses are expected to begin being issued to other operators by mid-year.
