Latest Off-Premise Data Shows Continuing Momentum
May 6, 2020The rapid growth in the off-premise continued in the week through April 25, according to Nielsen, with wine and spirits dollar sales jumping 29% and 40% year-on-year, respectively. Both categories were roughly even with their performance from the prior week. Beer, cider, and FMBs grew by 20% year-on-year and 6% compared with the previous week.
Moreover, premiumization appears to be continuing, with Nielsen seeing “an increase in the average price paid at off-premise retail outlets across all three alcohol categories, largely due to price/mix trading up activity,” including year-on-year price increases of 2.3%, 3.7%, and 4.7% for wine, spirits, and beer respectively.
Overall, wine’s dollar sales were up 29% from March 7-April 25, with Oregon and Italian wines driving gains and the $20-$25 price tier especially strong. Spirits sales jumped by 34% over the same period, with RTD cocktails, American and Irish whiskies, gin, and Tequila among the fastest-rising categories.—Daniel Marsteller
