Wine Spectator: Straight Talk With Rocco Lombardo Of Wilson Daniels

May 27, 2020

Straight Talk with Wine Spectator is a new Instagram series sponsored by Wine Access, featuring live conversations with wine-and-food newsmakers. The chats kicked off early last month amid widespread shutdowns from the Covid-19 crisis, in order to shed light on the changes and challenges these industries are facing.

In the May 21 edition, Wilson Daniels president Rocco Lombardo spoke with Wine Spectator senior editor Bruce Sanderson about how the pandemic has impacted the fine wine-focused importer and distributor, which handles prestigious labels including Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leflaive, Biondi-Santi, Elvio Cogno, Arnaldo Caprai, Bisol, and Schramsberg, among many others, and had revenues of $162 million last year.

As a noted supplier to the fine dining trade with about 55% of business typically accounted for by the on-premise, Wilson Daniels has adapted quickly to enhance its off-premise distribution during the shutdown, Lombardo notes, expanding its presence in off-premise national accounts, for example. Meanwhile, he says that Wilson Daniels will continue to be opportunistic in adding to its import portfolio, with Italy’s Piemonte region among the particular areas of interest. Watch the full episode to hear more from Lombardo, and tune in to Straight Talk on Wine Spectator’s Instagram page, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m. ET.
