Illinois Joins States Allowing Cocktails To Go, As Massachusetts Bill Moves Forward

Illinois has joined the increasing number of states permitting cocktails to go, with Governor J.B. Pritzker signing into law a bill that will allow on-premise accounts to serve the drinks in sealed containers, which must be placed in the trunk or other non-passenger compartment of customers’ vehicles. Illinois is the fifth-largest spirits market in the U.S. at more than 9.4 million cases, according to Impact Databank.

A similar law to Illinois’ is progressing in Massachusetts, passing yesterday in its state house of representatives. According to DISCUS, 33 states and the District of Columbia are now allowing restaurants and/or bars to sell cocktails to-go, bottled spirits to-go or both, and markets including Texas, Florida, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Washington, D.C. are considering leaving those policies in place permanently.—Daniel Marsteller
