Off-Premise Gains Taper, But Maintain Strong Double-Digit Growth

June 24, 2020

Off-premise growth has decelerated with the reopening of on-premise markets across the country, but wine, spirits, and beer are all still showing marked gains in Nielsen retail channels. Driven by hard seltzer, the beer, cider, and FMB category’s dollar sales jumped by 20.3% in the week through June 13, year-on-year, narrowly outpacing wine’s 20.1% increase. Spirits, meanwhile, continue to lead off-premise growth, advancing by 25.1% in the most recent week.

“Looking back over the last six weeks in aggregate, RTD cocktail sales are now bigger in Nielsen measured off-premise channels than both gin and Irish whiskey,” Nielsen noted. After RTD cocktails, Tequila has been the fastest-growing major spirits segment, followed by cordials and Cognac. Whiskies also continue to rise at double-digit rates.

From March 7 through June 13, spirits sales were up 34.6% by value and 31% by volume in Nielsen channels, while wine grew by 29.3% and 25.1% in those same measures respectively. Beer, cider, and FMBs expanded by 21.4% in dollar terms and 17.3% by volume over the same period.—Daniel Marsteller
