Josh Cellars, La Marca, Bota Box Drive Wine’s Off-Premise Growth
September 25, 2020For the first time during the pandemic, four-week wine volumes in Nielsen channels fell below double-digit growth rates (+9.7%) for the period ending September 5, with off-premise gains easing as pandemic restrictions on the on-trade are gradually lifted across the country.
Sparkling wine brands continue to outperform in the off-premise, with 31% volume growth in the 24 weeks through September 6 in IRI channels. Sparklers are up 24% year-to-date, thanks primarily to La Marca and other Prosecco brands. Imported sparkling wines (+32% year-to-date) outpaced domestic labels (+18%) in the 24 weeks through September 6. La Marca is projected to be the largest-selling sparkling brand by volume in the U.S. by year-end, according to Impact Databank, while Veuve Clicquot Champagne leads all sparkling wines in value terms, including the on-premise sector.
Among table wines, Gallo’s Barefoot continues to lead all brands in IRI channels by both volume and value, but the fastest-growing labels year-to-date among the top 10 are Delicato’s Bota Box (+55% in dollar terms) and Deutsch’s Josh Cellars (+45%). Bottled table wine priced at least $20 a 750-ml. is the fastest-growing segment (+31% year-to-date), followed by brands priced from $11 to $20 (+21%).
