September 28, 2020•Cake-Inspired Glenmorangie, WhistlePig Boss Hog, and new bottlings from Macallan, Bruichladdich, and Cascade Spirits are among the whiskies featured in Whisky Advocate’s latest weekly roundup. The magazine’s website has all the details.
•Clase Azul Tequila has announced the launch of the 2020 edition of its Día de Muertos Tequila, set to hit shelves on October 1. The 40% abv spirit is made from a blend of Clase Azul’s Plata, 8-month-old reposado, and 5-year-old Ultra—aged in ex-Sherry casks—Tequilas. The 2020 Día de Muertos Tequila is a limited release and only 2,000 bottles will be available globally, retailing for around $400 a 750-ml.
•Portugal’s Quinta do Ameal is releasing a new wine, Bico Amarelo, which translates to “Yellow Beak.” The new entry is composed of 40% Loureiro grapes from Quinta do Ameal’s estate in Vinho Verde, rounded out by 30% each of Alvarinho and Avesso sourced from nearby growers. It retails at $12. Quinta do Ameal’s wines also include a Loureiro ($18), Solo Unico ($40), and Escolha ($40). Ameal was acquired by Alentejo-based Esporao last year and is imported by New Jersey-based Now Wine Imports.
•Fever-Tree mixers saw revenue decline 11% to £104 million ($133m) in the first half of 2020, as a strong performance in the U.S. failed to offset double-digit declines in its U.K. and Europe regions. Adjusted EBITDA slipped 35% to £24 million ($31m). Driven by a robust off-premise performance and the rollout of a Sparkling Pink Grapefruit mixer geared toward Tequila cocktails, Fever-Tree posted 39% sales growth in the U.S., with revenue reaching £27.4 million ($35m). In the company’s home market of the U.K., however, sales fell 20% overall to £48 million ($61m), as a 24% increase in the off-trade could not overcome a 61% decline in on-premise business amid the pandemic.
