U.S. Champagne Shipments Down 20% In 2020
January 28, 2021As a result of Covid-19, 2020 saw Champagne shipments to the U.S. decrease by 20%, according to Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC), compared with a global volume decline of 18% to 245 million bottles. The pandemic shuttered many of Champagne’s primary enjoyment occasions, with major events and celebrations sidelined due to social distancing measures undertaken to combat the pandemic. The Champagne sector’s total turnover for 2020 is currently estimated at €4 billion ($4.8b), down by about 20% from the prior year, the CIVC said, adding that the full-year results were a bit better than anticipated at mid-year.—Julia Higgins
