Wine Spectator: 40 Years Of The Wine Experience
October 22, 2021Wine Spectator kicked off the 40th Anniversary Edition of its Wine Experience last night in New York City, with the festivities to continue today and tomorrow.
Every year as part of his welcoming remarks, Wine Spectator editor and publisher Marvin R. Shanken asks the people in the audience how many Wine Experiences they have attended. “Please stand if you’ve been to 10 or more,” Marvin says. Of the nearly 1,000 people seated in long rows in the ballroom of the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, hundreds stand. Scores are still standing at 20 years. A few hardy souls claim to have attended every Wine Experience since its debut, in 1981.
They are testifying that the Wine Experience has become more than the world’s best wine tasting. It has created a community, bringing together producers and aficionados from around the world, year after year. It’s a family affair. This year, the event marks its 40th Anniversary, a milestone made even more special after the pandemic canceled the 2020 edition. Wine Spectator has more.—Thomas Matthews
