BDSA: October Cannabis Sales Improved Across Many States

December 7, 2021

Cannabis sales growth has been soft in numerous markets this fall due to tough comparisons to the same period last year when the pandemic fueled an unprecedented surge in purchases. The situation improved somewhat in October, according to data from market research firm BDSA, with unexpected highs amid some continuing lows.

In the west, California’s cannabis sales eked out 0.9% sequential growth in October to reach $295.7 million in licit channels. Notably, loose flower fell 19% while pre-rolled joints rose by 16% and ingestibles were up 6%. Colorado saw even smaller growth at 0.5% sequentially for $180.1 million in October, where flower was also down, in this case 26%. In Oregon, sales grew 5.7% to $99.9 million. Nevada struggled as its sales dropped 0.9% from September to $72.4 million, with flower seeing a 28% drop there.

Arizona’s monthly haul of both adult-use and medical cannabis totaled $114 million, up 5% sequentially. While recreational sales are growing faster than medical (8% and 2%, respectively), Arizona’s market is still split nearly evenly between the two categories, with recreational contributing $57.1 million and medical contributing $56.9 million. This division stands in stark contrast to other states where the recreational market is far larger than its medical counterpart.
