The Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. (DISCUS) says the luxury tier gained speed in the third quarter, with brands retailing at $50 and above jumping 47% compared with the year-earlier period. According to the trade group’s luxury brand index, Tequila led the way at the upscale tier with 83% growth, followed by American whiskey and Cognac at around 38% each. Following the removal of tariffs on single malts, Scotch whisky reversed losses from 2020 with a 20% gain, while luxury Irish whiskey posted an increase of 19%. In the five years through September 2021, all spirits categories in the luxury index grew, averaging a rate of 22%.
