Online Alcohol Sales Reach $6.1 Billion In The U.S. In 2021

January 12, 2022

The e-commerce market for alcohol continued to boom in 2021, according to Rabobank, which says online alcohol sales in the U.S. hit $6.1 billion last year, jumping 131% compared with 2019. Online sales now represent about 4% of total off-premise sales, up from 1.9% in 2019. Much of the growth has come from the online grocery and marketplace segments, Rabobank says, which have grown fourfold over the past two years.

To meet the increasing online demand, U.S. alcohol companies have more than doubled the size of their e-commerce teams, on average, since 2019. Further growth is expected, with Rabobank predicting online alcohol sales will grow an additional 3.4% in 2022.—Daniel Marsteller
