Control State Spirits Volumes Slip 0.7% Through May

After a 1.2% decline in May, spirits volumes in U.S. control states have now fallen 0.7% year-to-date, according to the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association. Pre-packaged cocktails/RTDs (+31.5%) and Tequila (+11%) are the only two major categories to post double-digit gains year-to-date. Michigan, the largest control state, has fallen 2% through May but number-two Pennsylvania registered a modest 2.6% increase year-to-date.

Eight of the 10 largest-selling spirit items in control states lost volume year-to-date, but number-one Tito’s vodka posted a 12.7% rise. Among the top 50 brands, only two other spirits registered double-digit gains—Lunazul Blanco Tequila (+43.7%) and Crown Royal Peach Canadian whisky (+26.6%). Among the 20 largest suppliers in control states, the fastest-growing through May was Mast-Jagermeister US, due primarily to Teremana Tequila (+163% YTD).—Juan Banaag
