Import Player Vineyard Brands See Champagne, Burgundy, Rosé Driving Growth

April 14, 2023

While the imported wine market has slowed down some lately overall, 1.6-million-case player Vineyard Brands has been among those finding pockets of solid growth in the U.S., among them French offerings from regions like Champagne, Burgundy, and Provence. In some cases, supply is the only issue holding back even stronger gains.

“Demand for wines from Champagne and Burgundy has been particularly strong,” Vineyard Brands president and CEO Gregory Doody tells SND. “Champagne Salon and Champagne Delamotte have both seen tremendous growth recently. Unfortunately, in the case of Burgundy, the harvests in 2020 and 2021 were very small due. But the 2022 harvest was terrific, both in terms of quantity and quality. People are clamoring for Burgundy, and I think we’re now going to get back to a better supply situation.”

The top label in the Vineyard Brands range remains La Vieille Ferme, the second-largest French table wine brand in the U.S. after Chateau d’Esclans. La Vieille Ferme neared 630,000 cases in the U.S. last year, according to Impact Databank, up by about one-third over the past five years, led by its rosé offering. Portfoliomate Miraval, the rosé collaboration between the Perrin family and Brad Pitt, has likewise continued to climb, rising past 160,000 cases last year. Spain’s Marques de Caceres is another growing brand near the top of the Vineyard Brands range, advancing 12% to nearly 140,000 cases in 2022.

Meanwhile, Vineyard Brands has continued to add to its portfolio with a host of new offerings in recent years. Doody cites solid early traction for newcomers like Miguel Torres Chile, Domaines Comte de Malet Roquefort from Bordeaux, Domaine des Lambrays from Burgundy, Bass Phillip from Australia, Ingrid Groiss from Austria, and Kurtatsch and Serego Alighieri from Italy. This year that expansion has continued with the additions of Forman Vineyards from the Napa Valley, as well as Paul Achs, Loimer, Sattlerhof and Wieninger from Austria.
