Booker And Schumer Promise Continued Efforts In Congress

April 25, 2023

Speaking separately in recent days, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Cory Booker promised to keep working to pass cannabis legislation through Congress this session. Booker was approached by advocates from the group Minorities for Medical Marijuana following a committee hearing last week. The group asked him about the status of the SAFE Banking Act, the much-desired piece of legislation that would open the cannabis industry to numerous financial services, including banking, investment, and others.

Booker said he was working to get the package bill from last session, which included SAFE Banking as well as conviction expungement among other restorative measures, on the table again this session. “It was almost there,” he said. “And we are working to resurrect it now and working to get it over the line this Congress because, as I said to my team, if we have to wait another two years, it literally means that hundreds of businesses go out of business.”

Schumer, speaking at an event at the Capitol building last week commemorating the unofficial cannabis holiday 4/20, pledged to keep working on that same SAFE Plus package of proposals. “Until we reach our goal, I promise to be in your corner and work like hell bringing federal cannabis policy into the 21st century,” the majority leader said. “We will need you, as we always do, to reach out to members of both parties, in both chambers—especially Republican—so we can make progress on cannabis reform.”—Danny Sullivan
