Southern Glazer’s President Sheldon Stein To Retire July 1
June 8, 2023Southern Glazer’s president Sheldon “Shelly” Stein is set to retire on July 1. A key player in the 2016 creation of Southern Glazer’s via the merger of Southern Wine & Spirits and Glazer’s Distributors, Stein has since served as president of the combined company, which has projected revenues of $25.2 billion this year, according to Shanken’s Impact Newsletter, and an estimated 34% share of the total wholesale market for wine and spirits in the U.S.
“Shelly has been a transformative leader at Southern Glazer’s, leading the integration that made it possible for Southern Glazer’s to become the first truly cross-continental wholesaler,” said Wayne Chaplin, Southern Glazer’s CEO. “With his contributions, we established a structure that enables us to deliver the best portfolio of products across North America. We thank him for his service as president of Southern Glazer’s and look forward to working with him as a strategic advisor to our board of managers.”
Formerly vice chairman of global investment banking at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where he served as lead advisor for Glazer’s Distributors, Stein became president and CEO of Glazer’s in 2010. With his investment banking background, he played a critical role in the negotiations that ultimately led to the combination of Glazer’s with Southern Wine & Spirits, creating the first national wholesale wine and spirits footprint in the U.S.
Post-retirement, Stein will continue to serve as an advisor to Southern Glazer’s board of managers. He will also remain CEO of Glazer’s Beer and Beverage, the beer distribution business in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas owned by the Glazer family. In addition, Stein will continue to serve on the board of advisors for Deutsch Family Wine and Spirits and as the chair of the advisory board for WES Brands, whose portfolio includes Flecha Azul Tequila and BSB Flavored Whiskey.—Daniel Marsteller
