June 23, 2023•Ian Macleod’s Isle of Skye Range, Woodford Bonded Wheat, and newcomers from Laphroaig and Rabbit Hole are among the offerings featured in Whisky Advocate’s latest weekly roundup. The website has all the details.
•Tenute Capaldo has acquired the Galardi estate in Southern Italy. Galardi owns 10 hectares (25 acres) of vineyards in northwestern Campania and is known for its Terra di Lavoro bottling, developed under oenologist Riccardo Cotarella. Galardi also produces a second wine, Terra di Rosso. Management will remain with the founding family, with Allegra Selvaggi taking over as managing director, and Cotarella staying on as well. Tenute Capaldo’s portfolio also includes Campo alle Comete in Bolgheri; Basilisco, an organic winery in Vulture; and DUBL, the classic method sparkling wine line made from indigenous Campania varieties; as well as the flagship, Campania’s Feudi di San Gregorio, which has annual turnover of €30 million ($33m).
•Proximo Spirits has announced the latest limited edition Tequila from Maestro Dobel, Dobel 50 Cristalino Onora: Laca de Olinalá. The release is the second of three special edition bottlings from Maestro Dobel, bringing the brand together with Mexico City-based design studio Onora. The release features a custom bottle stopper designed by Adolfo Escudero García in the folk-art style of Laca de Olinalá. Fewer than 1,000 bottles will be available in the U.S. where the limited release carries a suggested price of $250 for a 750-ml. and $399 for a 1.75-liter bottle.
•Lana Tequila, a new luxury-priced spirit, has launched with a Blanco expression. The spirit, created in partnership with Prestige Beverage Group, is made from 100% blue agave that’s at least six years old when harvested. The Tequila is bottled at 40% abv and takes its name from the botanical name for Blue Weber agave, Agave Tequilana. Lana carries a suggested price of $79 a 750-ml. in Florida, New York, and Nevada, with further expansion planned. In addition to building out its distribution network, Lana will also release a Reposado Tequila ($99) in the near future.
•De Soi, the non-alcoholic sparkling aperitif brand from musician Katy Perry and distiller Morgan McLachlan, has launched Trés Rosé. The new canned release is inspired by sparkling rosé wine and, according to the company, offers a less bitter alternative to traditional aperitifs. Trés Rosé is now available in 4-packs through the brand’s website and in individual cans in retailers across the U.S. This fall, Trés Rosé will also be available in 750-ml. bottles.
•Miami-based sparkling cocktail brand Cool Cat has named Brian Smith as the company’s new chief commercial officer. Smith joins the low-calorie cocktail company from Canteen Spirits where he led that company’s sales team. In addition to time with Canteen, Smith also served for seven years at Pabst Brewing Company where he worked as chief sales officer. In his new role, Smith will be responsible for guiding Cool Cat’s sales and distribution strategy.
