Wine Spectator: Gallo Buys A Notable California Pinot Noir Player
June 26, 2023America’s largest wine company continues to expand, particularly with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. As SND reported last week, E.&J. Gallo has acquired Hahn Family Wines, one of the most notable wine companies on California’s Central Coast. The deal gives Gallo three new brands—Smith & Hook, Hahn, and Hahn SLH—but excludes the Hahn family’s impressive 1,100 acres of prime vineyards.
The deal helps Gallo broaden the medium-priced portion of their portfolio and gives it a larger presence in Pinot Noir. “Our strategy is to make wine as inclusive as possible, to serve as many consumers in as many occasions as we can,” Steve Carlotti, Gallo senior vice president and general manager, told Wine Spectator. “And I think the Hahn portfolio frankly offers us some opportunities. Our real opportunity is to broaden our footprint with wine consumers. That’s what the premise of the deal was for us.” Wine Spectator has the full story.
