Italian Specialist Ethica Wines Expands Range, As Existing Labels Gain Traction
September 18, 2023Miami-based importer Ethica Wines is adding two new Italian wineries to its portfolio, as the company’s profile continues to expand. Ethica had U.S. revenues estimated at over $70 million last year, out of approximately $90 million globally.
Ethica recently added the Antinori family’s Tenuta Principe Alberico property to its U.S. range. Led by Alessia, Albiera, and Allegra Antinori, Principe Alberico is located just outside Rome and is known for organic wines. Its offerings include Appia Antica Bianco ($23), Appia Antica Rosso ($25), Alberico Bianco ($80), and Alberico Rosso ($110). Also, starting in January, Ethica will begin representing Casanova di Neri, known for Brunello di Montalcino. The Tuscan producer’s wines include a Rosso ($38), Brunello ($90), Brunello Tenuta Nuova ($150), and Brunello Cerretalto ($400).
Meanwhile, Ethica is seeing strong growth for a trio of existing brands in its portfolio—La Gioiosa Prosecco, Villa Sparina, and Cafaggio—all of which recently earned Impact “Hot Prospect” awards. La Gioiosa Prosecco grew from 10,000 cases in the U.S. in 2019 to more than 80,000 cases last year, retailing at around the $15 mark.
Villa Sparina and Cafaggio also earned honors for the company, with the former known for its Gavi di Gavi DOCG ($18) and the latter emphasizing its Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG ($35). La Gioiosa is projected to hit 95,000 cases this year, while Villa Sparina is expected to reach 62,000 cases and Cafaggio is targeting 60,000 cases.
Damiano Sorato, vice president of sales, on-trade at Ethica, told SND the on-premise is a particular focus and has become a stronghold for the company, which counts Southern Glazer’s, M.S. Walker, RNDC, and Johnson Brothers among its distributors.
“Our growth strategy isn’t confined to a specific type of account,” he noted. “Instead, you’ll find these brands spanning a diverse spectrum of establishments, ranging from fine dining to casual eateries. This broad approach fosters a horizontal awareness of our brands, ensuring they resonate with a wide array of consumers across various dining experiences.”—Daniel Marsteller
