Sparkling Wine Boosted By Above-$10 Segment

September 19, 2023

While total sparkling wine consumption fell in the U.S. last year after 13 consecutive annual gains, sparkling brands priced over $10 a 750-ml. continue to buck the trend. The premium-plus import sector continues to be particularly resilient, driven by Prosecco—according to the current edition of The U.S. Wine Market: Shanken’s Impact Databank Review & Forecast.

While total sparkling wine imports are expected to decline by volume this year, brands priced at least $10 a bottle are projected to propel the segment to an overall gain in dollar terms. Last year, imported bubbly eked out a 1.5% gain, to more than triple its volumes of 20 years prior, according to Impact Databank. The $10 and above domestic sector, meanwhile, continues to receive a boost from the likes of Josh Cellars Prosecco and New Mexico’s Gruet.

Gallo’s La Marca Prosecco is the market’s fourth-largest-selling imported wine in the U.S. and the biggest sparkling wine overall by volume. La Marca is also the industry’s number-one brand priced above $15, according to the 245-page Impact Databank report. La Marca has become the Prosecco category’s clear standard-bearer, with a portfolio including the core bottling as well as a Rosé expression and a higher-priced Luminore DOCG offering.

Second-ranked Mionetto Prosecco introduced a packaging refresh earlier this year, and also expanded its event series Il Passaporto to additional markets. Meanwhile, Pernod Ricard has increased its minority investment in Sovereign Brands, importers of Luc Belaire, the largest-selling French sparkling wine in the U.S. by volume, according to Impact Databank, ahead of iconic Champagne brands Veuve Clicquot and Moët & Chandon.

After being severely impacted by the pandemic, the sparkling wine market in the U.S. continues to face increased pressure from RTDs and premium spirits, as well as uncertain economic conditions. But there appears to still be some upside for sparkling wines as the holiday season approaches—particularly from $10 and over brands—as the sector continues to evolve from occasion-driven consumption into much broader usage.
