Cannabis Trade Group Including Constellation, Molson Coors Weighs In On Illicit Market
September 26, 2023The Coalition for Cannabis Policy, Education, and Regulation released a report centered on strategies for eliminating the illicit cannabis market that calls on the federal government to take action. The group, whose members include drinks giants Constellation Brands and Molson Coors as well as tobacco companies Altria and Reynolds American, recommended seven core strategies for stamping out clandestine cannabis operations.
They include: interoperable traceability of products, using data to identify priority areas, tax stamps to designate legitimate products, federally established baseline minimum standards to address state-level discrepancies, a federal task force, federal guidance on enforcement priorities, and federal funding.
“Despite maintaining a stance of non-interference in state-level cannabis policies, the federal government has remained unwavering in its long-standing criminalization of cannabis. This inaction has incurred a substantial cost, giving rise to a widespread, thriving underground cannabis market,” said CPEAR executive director Andrew Freedman.—Danny Sullivan
