WSWA: Spirits Resilient In The On-Premise

November 16, 2023

While year-to-date volume trends through September show spirits down 5.1% and wine down 8.4%, according to the WSWA’s SipSource depletions tracker, the on-premise market for spirits continues to show resilience. Spirits are up 4.4% on-premise over the past year, with wine down 2.2%. While not quite back to their pre-Covid level, spirits continue to perform well in the on-premise channel,” SipSource said.

Among other growth segments, premixed cocktails are up 8.6% and Tequila and other agave spirits are up 2.8%. Price inflation has made an impact across the spirits category, with bottles priced above $25 still outgrowing those below, but by a significantly thinner margin than a year ago.

In terms of the holiday outlook, “Three consecutive challenging holiday seasons provide the industry with softer comparative numbers from last year,” SipSource noted. “Comparable trends from the last three months of 2022 are more friendly with spirits at +0.7% and -5.5% for wine,” providing tailwinds for both categories. —Daniel Marsteller
