On-Premise Boosts Spirits In Control States

November 29, 2023

The on-premise market for spirits in control states returned to growth in October, rising 3% in volume and 5.9% in value over the prior year, with price/mix at +2.9%. That helped boost overall spirits volume in control states to a 0.5% increase against the previous year, with value up 2.6% and price/mix coming in up 2.1%. On a rolling 12-month basis, spirits volume is up 0.4% in control states through October, generating a 3.2% gain in value.

While both value and volume are up, led by American whiskey and Tequila, the Tequila category is seeing a shift from super- and ultra-premium brands to premium labels in control states, with price/mix up 1.1% in October versus a rolling 12-month pace of 2.7%. Declines in brandy/Cognac and Scotch weighed down results somewhat in both volume and value terms. Meanwhile, control state wine volume was down 3.4% for the month, with value slipping 2.2%.—Daniel Marsteller
