Cannabis Briefs for December 26, 2023
December 26, 2023•The U.S. attorney general and a coalition of cannabis businesses are asking for an extension to file initial briefs in the case challenging the legality of federal enforcement of cannabis prohibition in state-legal markets. If approved, the extension would push the deadline to file briefs back to January 23rd. The lawsuit, as previously reported in SNDC, was filed in United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, Western Division and challenges the government’s formal ban on cannabis commerce within states that have legalized the trade. Cannabis companies signed on to the lawsuit include Green Thumb Industries, TerrAscend, Verano, and Ascend Wellness, along with Massachusetts-based cannabis operators Gyasi Sellers (CEO and founder of Treevit), Canna Provisions, and Wiseacre Farm, as well as Eminence Capital and Poseidon Investment Management.
•Snoop Dogg has partnered with Texas-based Hill Beverage on a new range of hemp-derived CBD and THC drinks called Do It Fluid. The initial lineup includes Blood Orange, Blue Razz, Cherry Limeade, and Peaches N Honies, each offered in CBD-only ($5 per can) and Delta-9 THC + CBD blend ($6 per can) versions. Do It Fluid is available now online through Hill Beverage and Death Row Cannabis websites, with national in-store availability slated to expand through 2024.
•Cannabis sales in Arizona cracked $1 billion in the year to date through September, including both retail and medical sales. Since retail launched in the state in 2021, Arizona has sold more than $4 billion in legal cannabis, according to the state’s Department of Revenue. While sales remain strong month-to-month, they have declined since hitting a peak of over $100 million in March, decreasing to below $90 million in May, and sitting at roughly $80 million for September. For the year through September, Arizona has collected roughly $175 million in excise tax from cannabis sales.
