Champagne Shipments Fall 8% In 2023
January 16, 2024Global shipments of Champagne were down 8.2% to 299 million bottles in 2023, according to the Comité Champagne. Exports also fell 8% to 172 million bottles, but remain above their 2019 level of 156 million bottles. Exports now account for 57% of total shipments, up from 45% a decade ago. The Comité Champagne attributed the 2023 decline partially to overstocking by distributors in 2022 as the industry emerged from the supply chain problems caused by the pandemic.
But it was noted that while volume fell last year, rising shipment value allowed global Champagne sales to remain above 6 billion euros ($6.5b) for the year. In the U.S., Moët Hennessy duo Veuve Clicquot and Moët & Chandon are the top two wine brands overall by retail dollars among all wines priced at $25 and over, according to Impact Databank.—Daniel Marsteller
