Cannabis Briefs for January 23, 2024
January 23, 2024•Curaleaf is entering the New York retail market, receiving its first license to open a retail shop in Newburgh, about 70 miles north of New York City. The company expects to have a soft opening for the store at the end of the month and is aiming to begin delivery services in the near future. In addition to Curaleaf’s entry into New York, another retailer, The Travel Agency: A Cannabis store, became the first company to secure a second retail license. The company’s second store—following its first outpost near Manhattan’s Union Square—will be in Brooklyn near the Barclays Center.
•Florida’s Trulieve has named Marie Zhang as the company’s new COO, effective January 29. Zhang comes to the cannabis industry with over two decades of experience in operations roles at a variety of companies including Blaze Pizza, Focus Brands, Yum! Brands, and ConAgra Foods. Trulieve is among the leading cannabis companies in the U.S. with especially strong positions in the Arizona, Florida, and Pennsylvania markets.
•The Cannabist Company Holdings has announced a leadership transition, with the company appointing a new CEO and president. The company has promoted David Hart, previously Cannabist’s president and COO, to CEO. Hart succeeds company co-founder Nicholas Vita who is retiring as CEO, though he will remain a director of the company. The company’s new president is Jesse Channon, previously Cannabist’s chief commercial officer. The Cannabist Co. is known for its namesake retail brand, which has 94 locations. Its product range includes flower, edibles, oils, and tablets under the Seed & Strain, Triple Seven, Hedy, gLeaf, Classix, Press, and Amber brands.
•The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission has unanimously voted to approve guidelines allowing for on-site cannabis consumption in the state. The rules, first discussed in December 2022, state that businesses can only have one consumption area, regardless of how many licenses are owned; that food cannot be sold but consumers can bring their own; that medical patients are allowed to bring in outside cannabis; no alcohol is permitted; and consumers must be 21 with ID to enter. The finalized rules will be published to the New Jersey Register by the end of February.
