Mary Jones THC-Infused Soda Targets 30 States By Mid-Year

February 13, 2024

Mary Jones, the THC-infused soda brand owned by Jones Soda Co., has launched a new line of sodas infused with hemp-derived Delta-9 THC, allowing them to be sold widely across the U.S. Currently, the hemp-derived THC drinks are available through the brand’s website and in traditional distribution in seven states, with the company aiming for 30 markets by the end of the second quarter.

“We’re working with traditional beer and alcohol distributors and sold in mainstream outlets like liquor stores and grocery stores,” brand director David Grigsby tells SND. “We’re the first mainstream CPG brand to do this, so we’re really aided by the brand recognition. People know it’s a trusted product.”

Mary Jones’s hemp delta-9 (HD9) releases come in four varieties—Root Beer, Orange and Cream, Green Apple, and Berry Lemonade—all matching popular releases from the original Jones brand. The HD9 drinks are available in three levels of potency: 2.5-mg., 5-mg., or 10-mg. “A lot of states haven’t had these types of products,” says Grigsby. “A lot of people don’t go into dispensaries, but maybe a mom now sees these products in a grocery store. We wanted to have something that’s approachable.”

Grigsby emphasizes that Mary Jones is focused on introducing the HD9 drinks responsibly. The cans all say “Start Low and Go Slow” to encourage consumers to take their time when consuming. “I think lower-dose products are important because in a social environment when you’re hanging out with friends, a cannabis beverage can be a new experience,” says Grigsby. “In the regulated (dispensary) market, the more experienced folks, they’re always going to want the higher doses. We want to provide that option for them, too.”

On the dispensary side, Mary Jones cannabis drinks are available in six flavors, with bottles containing 10-mg. of THC, cans with 100-mg. THC, and four flavors of syrups with 100-mg. THC. According to Mary Jones, the company’s cannabis-infused sodas are the leading carbonated cannabis drink in California, available in more than 350 dispensaries. The brand has recently expanded into Washington, Nevada, and Michigan, and says further expansion is on the way.

While the company continues to build in domestic markets, last week Mary Jones announced its expansion into Canada, where the company gained approval to launch in Ontario. Beginning soon, Mary Jones 10-mg. sodas will be on the market through the company’s new partnership with Tilray. In addition, Tilray and Mary Jones are exploring other cannabis categories for the Canadian market.—Shane English
