Exclusive: California Leads The Way Among Impact’s “Hot Brand” Wines

March 20, 2024

Every year, Shanken‘s Impact Newsletter recognizes the top-performing brands across the drinks industry with its “Hot Brand” awards. This year, the Hot Brand roster includes a total of 50 fast-growing brands from the wine, spirits, and spirits-based RTD categories.

There are three different ways to qualify as an Impact Hot Brand: a contender must have shown double-digit growth in each year from 2021-2023, or be an established player with at least 15% growth in 2023, or else be a top 10 brand with at least 5% growth in 2023 and 15% growth since 2020. The minimum volume requirement for spirits and imported wines is 200,000 cases, while domestic wines and RTDs must meet a threshold of 250,000 cases.

The wine category’s Hot Brand roster numbers 16 brands from the domestic and imported segments, with the vast majority hailing from California. The Golden State’s Hot Brand contingent includes 10 table wine offerings along with a non-alcoholic entry, as alcohol alternatives continue to gain steam with younger generations. On the imported side, the awardees include two Italian sparkling brands, a Spanish sparkler, and a table wine from the New Zealand segment.

Wine Hot Brands above 700,000 cases for 2023 include: Josh Cellars, La Marca, Vendange, Bread & Butter, Taylor, Whitehaven, Bota Box Mini, and Bota Box Breeze.
