April 22, 2024•Marco Felluga, who made exquisite white wines that helped put the Collio area of Italy’s Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region on the global wine map, died April 3. He was 96. Marco’s passing came shortly before his family formalized a new partnership with the Tommasi family of Valpolicella. The Tommasis have purchased a majority stake in the Felluga family’s winery and two estates—Marco Felluga and Russiz Superiore. Marco’s granddaughter Ilaria will remain at the helm of the wineries, however. Wine Spectator has more on Felluga’s life and career.
•Southern Glazer’s has promoted Anthony Capparelli to executive vice president, general manager, Nevada, effective May 1. Capparelli is filling the position of John Landry, who was recently promoted to executive vice president, general manager, California. Capparelli will report to Lewis Kenrick, president, West Region. The two-decade company veteran was most recently vice president, general manager, Off-Premise Chains, Florida. Southern Glazer’s leads the Nevada wholesale wine and spirits market with revenues projected at $1.1 billion this year.
•Campari Group is doubling the production capacity of Aperol by expanding its Novi Ligure plant, the company’s largest production hub globally, accounting for 29% of its volume. The investment of €75 million ($80m) includes a new bottling line dedicated to Aperol, aimed at supporting growing global demand in the aperitif segment. Aperol now accounts for almost one-quarter of Campari’s total sales. According to Impact Databank, the aperitif brand reached 9.6 million cases globally last year, up from 7.1 million cases two years earlier.
•Beam Suntory has brought back Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke, a limited-time-offering first released in 2022. The 40% abv whiskey starts as Basil Hayden’s original high-rye Bourbon but is then finished for six weeks in toasted and charred barrels that were filled with hickory smoke. The whiskey is now available for a limited time across the U.S. for a suggested price of $50 a bottle. Last year, the Basil Hayden portfolio was just above 500,000 cases in the U.S., according to Impact Databank.
•Brown-Forman has added a new Hard Tea to Jack Daniel’s Country Cocktails in select markets across the U.S. The 5% abv malt-based drinks combine the flavor of tea with fruit and are available in Original, Peach, Raspberry, and Blackberry. The brand extension is launching in California, Texas, Indiana, Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania in 12-can variety packs as well as 16- and 23.5-ounce single-serve cans for Original and Peach.
•Hopland, California’s Bonterra Organic Estates has promoted Tammy LaNasa to senior director of national on-premise accounts. LaNasa has been with Bonterra since 2012, working to grow the company’s chain business by 53% and helping to expand the namesake Bonterra brand’s on-premise placement by 120%. In her new role, LaNasa will oversee on-premise chains for commercial division Viña Concha y Toro USA, including all sales operations and strategies.
