Cannabis Briefs for May 14, 2024
May 17, 2024•According to a new survey commissioned by the Florida Chamber of Commerce, the upcoming ballot initiative to legalize cannabis is in trouble, with only 57% of respondents indicating that they would vote for legalization. While that is a majority it falls short of the 60% majority needed for the ballot initiative to pass. This is the third poll to show that the ballot initiative is falling short of the 60% threshold, according to reporting by Marijuana Moment. While the latest poll still shows the initiative falling short, the margin of error for the poll was +/-4%, making definitive conclusions difficult to draw.
•The patchwork U.S. cannabis market has brought in over $20 billion in taxes, according to a new report from the Marijuana Policy Project. The group also reported that 2023 brought in more than $4 billion alone as more and more states open adult-use markets. That $4 billion is the largest single-year total for legal cannabis in the U.S. The states bringing in the most in cannabis taxes include California at over $1 billion in taxes last year, Illinois and Washington at over $500 million each, and Michigan at nearly $475 million.
