Reposado Tequila, Cocktails, Prosecco Leading Growth: WSWA

August 9, 2024

Depletion growth in wine and spirits continues to be limited to a few distinct categories, according to the WSWA, even as inflation’s impact on consumers appears to be moderating. On the spirits side, Reposado Tequila and premixed cocktails are the star performers. Reposado Tequila depletions grew 10.7% over the 12 months through June, “showcasing resilience in premiumization, with products over $50 increasing by 25% and representing 32.8% of volume,” the WSWA noted. “Geographically, regions east of the Rocky Mountains are driving this growth, all showing increases of over +19%.”

Premixed cocktails also continue to rise, and now account for 14.9% of total spirits volume compared to 3.9% in June 2020. But they’ve been driving overall revenue down for the category, due to their lower pricing compared to full-strength spirits, representing something of a mixed blessing.

In wine, Prosecco rose 2.6% over the 12-month period, far outpacing total wine depletions, which fell 8.2%. The WSWA pointed out that the overall wine trend is “only 70 basis points worse than two years ago when volume was trending down 7.5%.” The wholesaler group also noted that despite premiumization progress in wine over the years, nearly 54% of table wine volume is still derived from bottles priced below $8, which have been in decline and represent a drag on the category.—Daniel Marsteller
