Whisky Advocate: Single Malts Pace The Auction Market

Single malt dominated the million-dollar list of the 20 highest hammer prices at auction in July, which produced a combined value of $1,017,291. For the second month in a row, this total outperformed the equivalent period from last year. With impressive performances from Macallan and Yamazaki in particular, the value of the 20 hammer prices was up 8.2% compared to July 2023.

July also produced a new highest single bottle hammer price for 2024 with the sale of a bottle of Yamazaki 55 year old at Sotheby’s, Hong Kong. It could have been even higher, however, as Whisky Hammer had another bottle of the Yamazaki for sale at the end of July. Despite bids exceeding $225,000, it failed to reach its reserve price.
