Both Presidential Candidates Now Support Cannabis Reform

September 10, 2024

With yesterday’s news that former President Trump will back cannabis rescheduling, decriminalization of cannabis, and state legalization efforts—including Florida’s upcoming adult-use ballot initiative—both major presidential candidates are now in favor of cannabis reform.

“I believe it is time to end needless arrests and incarcerations of adults for small amounts of marijuana for personal use,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “As a Floridian, I will be voting YES on Amendment 3 this November. As President, we will continue to focus on research to unlock the medical uses of marijuana to a Schedule 3 drug, and work with Congress to pass common sense laws, including safe banking for state authorized companies, and supporting states rights to pass marijuana laws.”

Industry observers hailed the statement. “It is a monumental moment in our ongoing fight for federal cannabis reform as the Presidential nominees of our two major parties have now both embraced legalization efforts,” said Saphira Galoob, executive director of the National Cannabis Roundtable “As we’ve seen in 38 states to date, such legal programs implement strict regulations to best protect our children, patients, consumers, and communities.”

With the statement, Trump is now in alignment with election opponent Vice President Kamala Harris on cannabis policy, with the two presenting a rare united front on the issue, as cannabis reform has steadily gained support—and voter approval—in states across the country.—Daniel Marsteller
