News Briefs for September 26, 2024
September 26, 2024•Angel’s Envy cofounder Wes Henderson is launching a new label, True Story. It will debut on October 10 with two whiskies: a Kentucky straight Bourbon finished in white Moscatel casks, and a blend of straight ryes finished in Amburana, Oloroso, and Pedro Ximénez casks. The Bourbon ($60, 45% abv) is sourced from undisclosed distilleries in Kentucky and aged 5 to 6 years in charred oak before finishing for up to 6 months in the Moscatel barrels. The rye ($70) is a 50% abv blend of 5 to 8 year old straight ryes, which is ultimately finished for 2 to 12 months in the Amburana-Sherry combo. Initially, both whiskies will be available in Kentucky and Tennessee, as well as online, but wider retail distribution will follow in the months and years to come. Whisky Advocate has more.

In addition, the brand, though Colossal Media, has put up a mural featuring Aldridge’s work in Brooklyn, New York’s Williamsburg neighborhood. Last year, Piper, imported by Folio Fine Wine Partners, was at 44,000 cases in the U.S., according to Impact Databank.
•Planteray rum is launching its oldest expression to date, Jamaica 1984. The 40-year-old limited edition is a 100% pot still rum from the Clarendon Distillery, selected from a single cask. Jamaica 1984 was first aged for 35 years in Jamaica, followed by five years in the Southwest of France in ex-Ferrand casks. Presented in a bespoke wooden box with an individually numbered bottle, its stopper contains a numbered medallion made from the cask that housed the rum during its long maturation in Jamaica. Bottled at 57.2% abv and retailing at $1,900, Planteray Jamaica 1984 is rolling out in the U.S. and Europe in very limited quantities. Planteray has almost tripled in size since 2017, nearing 180,000 cases in the U.S. last year, according to Impact Databank.
