Control States Spirits Volume Down 1.3% Through August

October 2, 2024

After a welcome 4.5% increase in July, total distilled spirit volumes in control states finished the first eight months of 2024 down 1.3% in control states after a 2.1% decline in August, according to the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association (NABCA). Pennsylvania and Michigan, the largest control states for spirits, are down year-to-date, along with number-four Ohio. Third-ranked North Carolina bucked the trend, rising 1.4% through August. Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, and Ohio are among the largest state markets for spirits in the U.S., according to Impact Databank.

Tito’s vodka is the largest-selling brand in control states, and it advanced 0.5% to 2.23 million cases year-to-date, according to NABCA. But among the 10 largest-selling spirits in control states, the fastest-growing is Spirit of Gallo’s High Noon seltzer, which grew 10.5% through August. Beyond the 10 largest brands, other fast-rising spirits year-to-date include three Tequila labels—Don Julio, Teremana, and Lunazul—as well as Stateside Vodka’s Surfside RTDs. Among all major spirit types, only pre-packaged cocktails and Tequila are expected to register growth in 2024 marketwide, according to Impact Databank.

Sazerac leads all spirits companies in control states, with a 1.8% gain through August, to over seven million cases and a nearly 19% share of NABCA volume. Number-two Diageo fell 2.2% year-to-date in control states. But Diageo remains the number-one spirits marketer overall in the U.S., according to Impact Databank, in both volume and value terms.—Juan Banaag
