Harris Backs Federal Cannabis Legalization
October 15, 2024Vice President Kamala Harris has announced that she will pursue federal cannabis legalization if elected president. The move is part of Harris’s wider “Opportunity Agenda for Black Men,” billed as a series of programs aimed at reducing inequality in the U.S. The cannabis reform plan, the campaign says, will alleviate inequalities in policing and incarceration that have resulted in black Americans, and black men in particular, facing disproportionate harms from American drug policy.
The announcement is a return to form for Harris, who advocated for federal legalization while serving in the U.S. Senate but has been quiet about the issue during her time as vice president. In addition to her legalization agenda, Harris has pledged to assist black entrepreneurs who enter the cannabis industry. The goal, according to her campaign, is to work with Congress to make legal cannabis “the law of the land.”
Her election opponent, former President Trump, said last month that he will back cannabis rescheduling, decriminalization of cannabis, and state legalization efforts—including Florida’s upcoming adult-use ballot initiative—putting both major presidential candidates in favor of cannabis reform.
