Rumor Mill Churns On Subject Of Layoffs At Southern Glazer’s

October 25, 2024

Social media posts indicate a potential significant downsizing at Southern Glazer’s, centered on the craft and fine wine divisions. While the posts are unconfirmed—and Southern Glazer’s didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment—they indicate that the nation’s largest distributor of wine and spirits could be tightening its belt amid continuing softness in the wine category in particular.

The rumors come as the wine industry continues to deal with post-pandemic normalization, retailer destocking, and competition from other categories like spirits-based RTDs. Southern Glazer’s, with revenues projected at $26 billion this year, according to Shanken’s Impact Newsletter, remains a bellwether for the industry, representing brands from a host of major suppliers across the wine category. Similar social media posts referenced layoffs at second-ranked wholesaler RNDC earlier this year.—Daniel Marsteller
