Texas Lt. Governor Proposes Full THC Ban
December 17, 2024Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick has announced a new bill to ban all THC products from the Lone Star State. According to Patrick, the ban is in response to the proliferation of intoxicating products in the state, which he claims are often orders of magnitude stronger than black market cannabis. The bill, Senate Bill 3, will be sponsored by Republican state senator Charles Perry and will be introduced when the state’s senate reconvenes in mid-January.
If passed and enacted, the bill would dismantle Texas’s robust hemp-derived THC market, which has seen major buy-in from beverage alcohol retailers like Spec’s, HEB, and Total Wine. Beyond the retail tier, a ban would force Texas-based brands like Bayou City to relocate or shut down. Bayou produces brands like Howdy, 8th Wonder, and Beach Break and, while the company is expanding distribution across the U.S., is still primarily focused on the Texas market.
Banning THC is a priority for Patrick, who, as Lt. Governor, wields considerable power in the state senate. This isn’t the first time the Texas government has attempted to ban THC, with a state health department-proposed ban being defeated in court in October 2023.—Shane English
