Massachusetts And Michigan See Record Cannabis Sales

December 24, 2024

Lifetime adult-use cannabis sales have hit nearly $10 billion in Michigan and surpassed $7 billion in Massachusetts, with the states’ markets coming online in 2019 and 2018, respectively. These milestones come as both states are seeing banner years for adult-use sales, with Michigan topping $3 billion through November and Massachusetts reaching $1 billion in sales over the same timeframe. For the year, including adult-use and medical, Michigan is projecting $3.3 billion in sales, roughly $300 million more than 2023.

In November, Massachusetts set a single-day sales record on Green Wednesday (the day before Thanksgiving), moving more than $8 million in cannabis products, breaking the state’s previous single-day record, set on 4/20, 2024. According to officials, flower, pre-rolls, and vapes were the biggest hits on Green Wednesday, although declining prices continue to hamper the market, with the state’s average price-per-gram of flower falling to $4.58.

Michigan also broke records in November, with cannabis sales reaching roughly 103,000 pounds of flower for the month, surpassing the previous record set in August. While November was a record-breaker by weight, by sales dollars August 2024 is still supreme at $295.4 million in sales, with falling prices causing November’s tally to top out at $276.4 million.

With all of these records set before including the states’ December sales, 2024 is looking to be an exceptionally strong year for legal cannabis in some of the country’s maturing markets.—Shane English
