La Marca, Mionetto, Josh Prosecco Lead Gains In Sparkling Wine
December 26, 2024While total sparkling wine volume is projected to slip again in the U.S. this year, according to Impact Databank, key brands from the $15 and above segment are showing gains in the off-premise as we near the end of the year. Led by Gallo’s La Marca, Prosecco continues to loom large in the sparkling category, accounting for more than 10 million case shipments to the U.S. last year, up from fewer than 8 million cases pre-pandemic.
Lately La Marca—now above 3.2 million cases in the U.S., according to Impact Databank—has been focused on expanding its on-premise presence. “We continue to gain traction with accounts that are looking for a premium branded Prosecco and as a branded placement in cocktails,” said Gallo vice president of marketing Beth Orozco. The popularity of Spritz cocktails featuring sparkling wine has given Prosecco another leg up in the market, she added. Meanwhile, La Marca’s off-premise volume is up 6% through the first 11 months of this year.
Second-ranked Prosecco label Mionetto has soared at retail this year, jumping 17% in Circana channels. With that performance, the brand appears poised to cross the million-case mark nationwide. “Prosecco will remain a growth driver for sure,” Henkell Freixenet CEO Dr. Andreas Brokemper told SND. “We see very nice developments on the Mionetto brand. We have another great opportunity with Freixenet Prosecco, which is growing nicely in the U.S. market.”
Josh Cellars Prosecco, from Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits, neared a quarter-million cases last year on 18% growth, earning Impact “Hot Brand” honors in the process. So far this year, the brand is up 19% in Circana channels, and Deutsch Family president Tom Steffanci told SND he expects Josh’s Prosecco to continue its expansion moving forward.
Moët Hennessy counts three brands among the top premium and above sparklers, including Champagne leader Veuve Clicquot and second-ranked Champagne Moët & Chandon. “We continue to embed these brands in culture, through Moët & Chandon’s partnership with the U.S. Open as one example,” said Chris Gabaldon, CEO of Moët Hennessy North America. “Consumers are looking for new expressions. In September we launched a a special-edition Vintage 2015 of Dom Pérignon honoring artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. It’s been very well received. We also just launched Dom Pérignon Vintage 2006 Plénitude 2, the highest expression of the vintage.” The luxury giant is also active in premium California sparkling wine with Chandon, which has advanced 2.5% at retail this year, after depleting nearly a half-million cases marketwide last year.
Also in the Champagne segment, Palm Bay recently made a move, gaining the third-ranked Nicolas Feuillatte brand effective January 1. “Nicolas Feuillatte has established itself as a leader in the Champagne category while walking to the beat of its own drum,” Palm Bay president and CEO Marc Taub told SND, adding that Palm Bay will look to build on 87,000-case Feuillatte’s momentum in the market.
For Laurent-Perrier, the fourth-ranked Champagne brand in the U.S. at 55,000 cases, prestige cuvée Grand Siècle has been a clear bright spot. “Grand Siècle has had fantastic pull-through thanks in part to stellar critical ratings and our media campaign featuring Morgan Freeman,” Laurent-Perrier US president Michelle DeFeo told SND.
Wilson Daniels also continues to see promise in premium sparklers, with Bisol Prosecco expected to be around 130,000 cases this year and Pierre Sparr Cremant d’Alsace at 30,000 cases. “In California with Schramsberg, we’re holding steady at right around 80,000 cases with Schramsberg and Mirabelle,” noted Wilson Daniels CEO Rocco Lombardo.
