Santa Margherita USA Cautiously Optimistic Despite Imported Wine’s Challenges
April 28, 2025Amid uncertain times in the imported wine category, upscale Italian label Santa Margherita has outperformed lately, with U.S. volumes holding relatively flat last year at 750,000 cases, against a total Italian wine category down 4% to 22 million cases, according to Impact Databank. Over the past five years, the Santa Margherita brand has averaged 5.4% growth annually. It’s now the third-ranked Italian table wine in the U.S. by retail value at $257 million, and the sixth-largest player among imported table wines overall.
“Our Pinot Grigio continues to be a loyal consumer favorite, our Chianti Classico Riserva has been on a 10-year growth streak, and our Rosé leads the Italian premium category and has strong momentum behind it,” says Vincent Chiaramonte, president and CEO at Santa Margherita USA.
Growth is also coming from the sparkling segment. “We continue to experience growth with our Torresella Prosecco and a good level of performance for our Santa Margherita Prosecco Superiore,” Chiaramonte notes. “Prosecco and other metodo classico wines still have the bandwidth to grow as retailers and restaurateurs are actively educating consumers on Champagne alternatives.”
Among other Italian offerings in the Santa Margherita USA portfolio, red blend Sella Antica has expanded by 15% over the past year, says Chiaramonte, and the company also launched the Giovanni Rosso range of Piedmont wines in 2024.
Meanwhile, Santa Margherita USA expanded into Oregon in recent years with the acquisition of a majority stake in Roco, known for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and sparkling wines. Early this year the company purchased Marsh Estate, a vineyard and agricultural property in the state’s Yamhill-Carlton AVA, and has a hospitality center in development to showcase its Oregon offerings.
Looking forward, while Chiaramonte is wary of the tariff situation’s potential impact on Italian wines, he notes that the portfolio “falls within the retail price range of $14.99 to $49.99, which has shown resilience. I am cautiously optimistic but also very aware of the challenges ahead.” –-Daniel Marsteller
